Production Notes
Diane Samuels’s Kindertransport ran March 24–April 15, 2000, directed by Hal Kohlman. Set across 1939 and 1979, it follows Eva, a Jewish child sent from Nazi Germany to England, who grows into Evelyn and suppresses her past until her daughter Faith uncovers family documents. Elisa Solomon played Eva and Lin Hartgrove portrayed the same person as an adult; Eric Jensen played the symbolic Ratcatcher, who embodies threatening authority. Samuels drew on interviews with actual Kindertransport survivors, although Eva/Evelyn is fictional. The original CST webpage includes Kohlman’s director’s note, connecting the play’s themes of parent-child separation and heritage to the Cuban children’s Operation Pedro Pan while acknowledging the different historical circumstances. The page documents London’s 1993 premiere and New York’s 1994 premiere, both directed by Abigail Morris. Nine production photographs survive. The original crew spelling is Stacia Robal, whereas another CST page credits Stacia Roybal; the variation is unresolved. The production was presented by special arrangement with Susan Schulman, A Literary Agency.
