Production Notes

1991 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play and 1993 Olivier Award for Best Play, as noted in original CST publicity. Original CST design notes specify Kandinsky references: Accent in Pink (1926) and Improvisation XXXI (Naval Battle) (1913) for a double-sided painting; Unbroken Line (1923) for the set; Light (1930) for poster design. Play inspired by David Hampton’s 1980s impersonation of Sidney Poitier’s son; CST’s notes credit Osborne Elliott as the source who told Guare the story. Themes explicitly noted by CST include race, homophobia, homelessness, celebrity, privacy, and generational conflicts. Special thanks: Zak Lowery, Suzanne Charney, Jon Womastek, Doobie Potter, Michele Feltman-Strider, Mary Freeh. Dramatists Play Service license; originally produced by Lincoln Center Theater.
